A Two-Dimensional Framework for RFID Adoption and Diffusion: Strategic Implications for Developing Countries

Although there has been a growing interest in studying RFID in various application areas, little research has been undertaken to address applications in developing countries. Among the research that has been undertaken in developing countries, organizational perspectives have received considerable attention but less has been undertaken from other perspectives such as industry and country level. In this paper, a literature study of RFID adoption from different perspectives is presented and focuses on the stages of adoption, level of analysis, and issues of developing countries. A stage-scale (2S) framework is proposed to help identify relevant success factors in RFID adoption and diffusion, as well as its relation to other factors. It is concluded that the proposed framework is useful in providing a broad view of RFID adoption and in observing the dynamic changes in RFID issues from different stages, which is useful for policy and decision makers. Based on this framework, most factors of RFID adoption in developing countries fall within the preliminary stage, while the factors that are shared with developed countries are mostly situated in intermediate stages

User Acceptance of Mobile Broadband in Nigeria

Broadband access has been identified as a fundamental part of any thriving economy because it contributes to GDP.Ā  Besides, mobile broadband has been seen as the means for which developing countries can leapfrog into the post-industrial era. According to the figure released by Nigerian Communications Commission in April, 2014, the number of mobile internet subscribers had dropped from 64.5 to 63 million as at February, 2014 and steadily rose to 87 million in April, 2015. Considering those figures and comparing it with the national population figure of about 178 million, and the mobile telephone subscription figure of about 145 million in Nigeria, the rate of acceptance of mobile broadband is not an appreciable penetration rate to substantially drive the adoption of other e-services like mobile commerce, mobile payment services throughout the entire country, except for few cities. To bridge this gap and foster faster rate of acceptance of mobile internet, this paper sought to investigate the factors that could stimulate the intention of users to use mobile broadband in Nigeria by empirically validating an integrated research model, adopted from the unified theory of acceptance and use technology (UTUAT) model by integrating mobile broadband motivation, government support and perceived price value constructs. Online survey data was collected from 376 respondents and analyzed using partial least square (SmartPLS) technique. Result shows that mobile broadband motivation, government support, perceived price value, social influenceā€™ and facilitating conditions are significant determinants of intention behavior to use mobile broadband in Nigeria. The findings of this research are vital to telecoms and broadband service providers in understanding the factors that stimulate peopleā€™s behavior for subscribing to mobile internet and for deploying infrastructures and services; it will also help government and telecoms regulators to streamline their policy towards meeting these factors. To the academia, this integrated research model presents an extended view of the UTAUT model for investigating the determinants of broadband acceptance in developing countries. Internet Customer Segmentation Using Web Log Data

The objective of this paper is to analyze web transaction log data that reveal customer behavior in the Internet channel, and to provide a useful online customer segmentation scheme. To achieve this, we analyze the relationship between the behavior of customers for online pet shops and revenue. We use the decision-tree method as a data-mining technique, and clustering analysis to segment customers.  We perform the study in two stages. First, we investigate the web transaction data of both the member customers and nonmember customers of a Korean online pet shop. Second, we narrow down the study focus and analyze only the member customers’ demographic data and their web transaction data. As a result, we obtain several meaningful segments based on customers’ transaction behavior and demographic characteristics. We use web log data to analyze customer transaction behavior and log-in information to analyze customer demographic characteristics. We discuss some strategic implications, for online shopping mall marketing, suggested by the acquired market segments

Cloud risk communication on social media: The case of Premera Blue Cross

Abstract Cloud computing has been growing at a fast pace. This growth has been fueled by this technology's inherent benefits such as cost reduction and convenience. However, the increasing amount and variety of data processed on the cloud have raised the number of security breaches. Although cloud providers were responsible for data security in the past, the new threats require that both cloud providers and users coordinate efforts to minimize losses and ensure data recovery. Our study aims to explore how cloud providers and users can leverage social media to mitigate data security breaches through effective risk communication. We analyzed public data collected from Twitter regarding the security breach faced by the Premera Blue Cross web application between January and April 2015. Preliminary results indicate that Premera Blue Cross (cloud provider) acted as an information source for Twitterers seeking relevant and accurate information during this security breach. Future steps for this study are discussed
